My summary
This new study published in The Lancet shows that simply adding a daily cup of cooked navy beans to your diet for just 8 weeks can shift the gut microbiome composition and function to enhance diversity and support beneficial bacteria linked to reduced inflammation and cancer risk.
Researchers at MD Anderson Cancer Center conducted the "BE GONE" trial among 48 overweight adults with a history of colorectal polyps or cancer, otherwise following their normal diet.
After 8 weeks on the bean diet, markers of a 'healthy' gut microbiome significantly increased, including boosted microbial diversity and the growth of specific beneficial bacteria like Faecalibacterium, Bifidobacterium, and Eubacterium species. Some pathogenic bacteria also decreased, reflecting the beans' prebiotic effects.
The study also showed that circulating metabolites and immune biomarkers shifted as well. However, once patients stopped eating navy beans and returned to their regular diets, most of these favorable microbiome and metabolite changes reversed.
My thoughts
We are indeed in times where people are advised to consume supplements and some go to spend hundreds of dollars on them every month.
However, when you search the literature there are several very serious studies that show that some very affordable and accessible food and diet can do as much if not better than many supplements.
HAPPY to hear your THOUGHTS and Stay POSITIVE!
